ELLESMERE a sorti le vendredi 30 novembre 2018 son nouvel album Ellesmere II - From Sea And Beyond via le label AMS/BTF.
Trois ans après l'originel "Les Châteaux de la Loire", Ellesmere est de retour, toujours mené par le multi-instrumentiste italien Roberto Vitelli, qui a écrit la musique et les paroles de chaque chanson et s'est occupé de la plupart des parties de basse et de claviers des sept pistes qui font partie du concept. Chaque chanson traite d'un aspect différent de la relation complexe entre l'homme et la mer, de la curiosité et de la peur de l'homme à ce qui est caché au fond de la mer, à l'appel de l'aventure et au voyage jusqu'au bout du monde connu… et au-delà. La mer, l'inconnu, la grandeur de l'infini et l'âme humaine sont les thèmes clés qui unissent le concept qui nourrit l'album.
"Ellesmere II" sonne beaucoup plus énergique et varié que sur le précédent album. Il n’est pas difficile de trouver des similitudes avec les grands noms prog du passé: Yes vient immédiatement à l’esprit, mais aussi King Crimson lors des moments les plus âpres (une citation de "Red" est cachée dans le second titre), le stimulant jazz progressif britannique, le caractère symphonique d'ELP, l'électricité des mélodies de Kansas, les accords à couper le souffle dans des séquences typiques de Magellan et de Cairo, les atmosphères intimes et sombres des premières productions de Peter Gabriel. La brève partie instrumentale d’ouverture est un lien entre le dernier morceau de l’œuvre précédente, encore flou et plein des sons de la nature, et ce nouveau voyage dans les eaux. L’imprévisibilité de la mer sauvage est illustrée par l’alternance de pistes complexes et percutantes ("Marine Extravaganza", "The Schooner" et "Time, Life Again") et d’autres plus courtes et plus calmes ("Runaway", "Ridge Fanfare") .
Vitelli a également demandé à des musiciens exceptionnels de le rejoindre dans son périple : Robert Berry (3, Keith Emerson) au chant; Trey Gunn (King Crimson, David Sylvian, UKZ, Security Project) à la Warr Guitar; David Jackson (Van der Graaf Generator, Osanna) au saxophone; Alan Benjamin (Advent, Mirthrandir), Brett Kull (Echolyn), Davy O'List (The Nice, Roxy Music) et Keith More (Arena, John Wetton) aux guitares; Marco Bernard (The Samuraï Of Prog) à la basse; Daniele Pomo (RanestRane) à la batterie.
La pochette de cet album est également une œuvre d'art car elle a été spécialement créée par le peintre et designer anglais Colin Elgie (qui fait également partie du célèbre studio Hipgnosis), le même qui a dessiné les pochettes de "A Trick of a Tail" et "Wind and Wuthering " de Genesis dans les années 70.
Three years after the debut "Les Châteaux de la Loire" Ellesmere are back, still led by the Italian multi instrumentalist Roberto Vitelli, who wrote the music and the lyrics of every song and took care of most of the bass and keyboards parts on the seven tracks that are part of the concept. Every song deals with a different aspect of the complex relationship between man and sea, from man's curiosity and fear towards what is hidden deep inside the sea to the call for adventure and for traveling to the end of the known world... and beyond. The sea, the unknown, the infinity grandeur and the human soul are the key themes that tie together the concept that feeds the album.
"Ellesmere II" sounds way more energetic and varied compared to the previous work. It's not difficult to find similarities with the great prog acts of the past: Yes immediately does spring to mind, but also King Crimson during the rawest parts (a quote from RED is hidden in the second track), UK challenging jazz prog, the symphonic attitude of ELP, Kansas tension towards melody, the breathtaking chord changing sequences typical of Magellan and Cairo, the intimate and gloomy mood from early Peter Gabriel productions. The brief opening instrumental section links to the last track of the previous work, still hazy and filled with the sounds of nature, and this new journey into the waters. The unpredictability of the savage sea is depicted by the alternation of complex and impact tracks ("Marine Extravaganza", "The Schooner" and "Time, Life Again") to other shorter and quieter ones ("Runaway", "Ridge Fanfare").
Vitelli also asked some outstanding musicians to join him on his journey: Robert Berry (3, Keith Emerson) on vocals; Trey Gunn (King Crimson, David Sylvian, UKZ, Security Project) at the Warr Guitar; David Jackson (Van der Graaf Generator, Osanna) on saxophones; Alan Benjamin (Advent, Mirthrandir), Brett Kull (Echolyn), Davy O'List (The Nice, Roxy Music) and Keith More (Arena, John Wetton) on guitars; Marco Bernard (The Samurai of Prog) on bass; Daniele Pomo (RanestRane) on drums.
The album artwork is also a piece of art, as it was specifically created by the English painter and designer Colin Elgie (also part of the famous Hipgnosis Studio), the same who drew Genesis' "A trick of the tail" and "Wind and wuthering" sleeves back in the 70s. (AMS RECORDS)
